Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rubbermaid 3B2103CHROM Valet Bar Garment Rack, Chrome and BlackCustomer Review: Not worth it! Summary: 1 Stars
This is the first time in all the years I've been ordering from Amazon that I've been moved to write a review. I was wary of this product from the reviews, but I wanted to make use of my Amazon Prime status, and there were as many good reviews as bad, so I decided to take a chance. Big mistake.
To begin with, the "instructions" are laughable. they tell you to make sure you have all the parts before you start. But there is no parts list. I called Rubbermaid. You are supposed to count the number of parts in the illustration. You are also supposed to figure out which parts are which and where they go from the illustration, which, considering the quality (or lack thereof) of the illustration is time-consuming.
I decided, having read the reviews, to go slowly and carefully. Other reviewers had remarked on the difficulty of pounding it the side struts, and recommended using a padded mallet. I used a regular hammer wrapped with a towel, and that seemed to work well. The dowels that make up the lower "rack" came loose easily, I had to re-insert them several times. The wheels fell out several times, eventually I realized that they have to be forced in until they click. (None of this is remarked upon in the "instructions".) Incidentally, I understand why Rubbermaid wants to have their product made in China, but why don't they have someone put the thing together and write a coherent set of instructions? Or at least some tips, or troubleshooting guidelines?
Finally, I got it assembled. It looked nice, I have to admit. However, within a day of being loaded, it overbalanced and fell to the right. I decided that perhaps I shouldn't use the protruding ends for anything heavy, and redistributed the clothing so that all heavy items were in the middle. By the end of the first week I noticed that it was again tilting to the right. I checked all the joints, and could find no reason for this. I rebalanced clothing again so that all the heavy stuff was on the middle left, and pushed the right protruding bar back in, so it would not be used. Two days ago it fell to the right again, landing on my eight-year-old daughter. I had to raise the right support bar higher than the left to keep it in place. It now looks like a piece of angular sculpture.
It's been two weeks and it's fallen twice, and had to be readjusted several times. This model cannot handle any significant amount of clothing. Unless you're intending it for very light use, pay the extra money and get a sturdier garment rack.
Hopefully, the bad reviews will outweigh the good ones now.
