Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rubbermaid 3F23 Configurations Three-Handle Storage Chest With Cedar Inserts, NaturalCustomer Review: Perfect Under-Poang Storage Summary: 4 Stars
I am absolutely pleased with this item. I was lucky enough to get it at a little below the typical Amazon price and it does just what I wanted it to. It now holds 2+ queen size sheet sets (including a bulky jersey set) and sits under the ottoman of my Ikea Poang chair in my bedroom.
Other reviewers have commented that it is not very sturdy - more like a supported canvas bag - and I would second that, but I don't think it's a problem. All I need this bag to do is sit under a chair holding sheets. If you want a box sturdy enough to stack, lug around a lot, or get similarly hard use, you'll need to look elsewhere.
I'm also glad I didn't expect much out of the cedar inserts - but I was still surprised by how little there is. It's no exaggeration to say that there are two approximately tongue-depressor sized pieces of posterboard-thickness cedar in two wee fabric pockets. I happened to have some cedar planks for grilling hanging around and laid them out across the bottom of the tote. Otherwise, I'd advise having some sachets or similar handy, should you want your linens to actually get enough cedar to help protect them from critters or staleness.
Customer Review: Not What I Hoped For Summary: 1 Stars
This chest really is just a bad mistake. The bottom and top is a very thin fabric, and the sides sag and collapse if you pick it up with even the slightest weight inside it. The sides are framed by two separate cardboard type pieces (2 each side) that meet in the middle. Picture if you took two pieces of cardboard and put them end to end, just touching, but not connected. These pieces give it NO side support so the whole thing flops inward in the middle, pretty much collapsing in on itself, and the thin cloth bottom hangs downward with whatever you have inside when you pick it up. Even empty it sits bent in the middle looking a flimsy mess. I wanted to use this chest for some photo storage, but I'm not really sure what I could use this for. They really should not call this a chest, as that implies that it has some structure, and that you can use it for light storage. I'm not sure what you could store in this, as the structural problems give it the same effect as wrapping something in a misbehaving, misshapen pillow case. I rather expected it to have thin cedar inserts that kept the box rigid, or SOME type of frame that supported it. Really, really bad product.
Customer Review: Worth the Money Summary: 4 Stars
I just moved and I have been spending money on other necessities rather than bedroom furniture. But I still needed something affordable to store my clothes until I could get an actual dresser. I also wanted something that I could still use after I got furniture. This was perfect.
The word chest is very misleading because it is much smaller than what you think of when you hear chest. Don't expect to fit your entire winter wardrobe in one "chest." You'll need at least three. More than likely, you'll need four or five.
Also, I read in reviews that the cedar inserts are small...and I was like..psshhh...whatever. Well, it's true! They shouldn't even say that cedar inserts are included because it's such a disappointment. If they didn't even list that at all, it would have been a nice (very little) surprise. Instead, I thought...are these supposed to be the cedar inserts? They are flimsy little strips.
Also, keep in mind these are made of canvas. So they aren't great for stacking. But they are perfect for under the bed. Definitely worth $10.00 and I think they look much nicer than the plastic storage containers.
Customer Review: Works great for storing clothing. Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered 2 of these. I was worried about the quality when I read some of the reviews here, but I really like these storage containers. Plus the price was so inexpensive! I have no problems with the walls on the container standing up on their own, even when they are empty. Only time I think they might lose their shape is if you stacked something on top of them when they are empty. But I have them both full right now and have one stacked on top of the other and they have been holding perfect shape. They offer lots of room and the zipper works well.
Only thing I would say is the "Cedar Inserts" are such a joke. There are 2 of them and they are the size of popsicle sticks. But I guess they do say they are Cedar Inserts not Cedar Lined. Just don't buy these with the idea your getting anything special with the Cedar. But I find these containers very useful and would not hesitate buying more.
Customer Review: Shame on Rubbermaid Summary: 1 Stars
The only good thing I can say about this chest is that it doesn't cost much. In other words, the chest is cheap. Actually, it's not really even a chest; its a rectangular canvas bag off of which the flimsy cloth handles tore almost immediately. As far as the "cedar inserts" go, they turned out to be two tiny, non-functional slivers of cedar veneer stitched into miniscule cloth pouches - just enough for the manufacturer to imply that there is some sort of cedar framing or lining, which there is not. To use the word "cedar" in association with this junky product is purposefully misleading. Shame on Rubbermaid for putting their once-trusted name on this so-called "Storage Chest With Cedar Inserts". It should be called "Light-Duty Rectangular Canvas Storage Bag". At least that would be honest.
