Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rubbermaid Antimicrobial Large Dish Drainer, BlackCustomer Review: Rubbermaid should be ashamed Summary: 1 Stars
I have been buying Rubbermaid dish drainers since I got my first apartment back in the '70s and took their quality for granted. In the last couple of years, Rubbermaid has cheapened this simple product to the degree that it no longer works like it should. The newer drainers are not as heavy, the prongs are not tall enough to hold a larger dinner plate upright (anything over 10" will tip) and their angle is wrong, the oblong flatware caddy is an abomination in all ways mainly by not holding utensils straight up so they can dry with fewer water spots - not to mention knife points getting stuck in the oval slots, and the vinyl coating is inferior.
Shame on Rubbermaid for dirty-ing its name by offering such a crappy version of one of its original brand-building products. It's obvious Rubbermaid has no respect for its American consumers and it's too bad that young adults just starting out will not realize that this product is junk. I will not buy another Rubbermaid drainer; I prefer to pay more for something that will perform and last longer.
Customer Review: Great value; grossly exaggerated negative reviews Summary: 4 Stars
Don't sweat the negative reviews; there is really nothing wrong with this drainer. It could use more storage space for silverware, but aside from that, it's ideal.
I've seen a lot of people claim there is a HUGE "hole" that dishes can fall out of. This is retarded. There is a SMALL space, which is blocked by the silverware holder, but no dishes could possibly fall out, through this. As for the silverware holder, itself: it would be nice if there were two, but there is nothing wrong with the one included; it is of average size and normal utensils stand up in it, just fine, so long as you're not trying to jam anything huge, in there.
This drainer is well-made, functional, attractive, and VERY reasonably-priced. No, Rubbermaid "doesn't make 'em like they used to," but that's true of virtually any product, from any brand. There are no crazy design flaws, here; just an economical way of holding your dishes as they dry. You could probably find a better dish drainer, but you will not find a better one anywhere NEAR this price.
Customer Review: Very well made Summary: 4 Stars
I've heard of dish racks that can accumulate mold. This one doesn't have such a problem, either because of its wire design or because it has an antimicrobial coating. Fits a good number of plates and dishes, and even has cup holders for eight cups (if you have bigger mugs, you might not be able to fit eight of them).
I don't understand the design behind the utensils tray though. The holes are fine and nothing falls through (not even thin chopsticks), however it is on a weird swivel. If there isn't a dish right behind it, the utensils tray swivels inward from the weight of the utensils. This makes the utensils stick out and makes it easier for longer items (like chopsticks) to fall out. I always make sure to keep a plate or a large bowl right behind this to keep the utensils tray stabilized at a nearly vertical angle.
Customer Review: Come to the Dark Side! Summary: 4 Stars
I replaced a disintegrating white dish drainer much like this one with this new sleeker looking black dish drainer.
I am not sure I like the silverware cup but I am sure I will get used to it. I also would have preferred that it could be removed to carry silverware to the drawer to be put away.
It doesn't seem as sturdy as the one I had originally and I wonder if it will last nearly as long. The cup holders are a bit more flexible and bend much easier. I wonder if that could eventually become a problem by bending too far and breaking off.
I would have purchased this exact item in white but it was almost $5 more expensive. Seriously, I'm buying a dish drainer. It's not like buying something that is actually important.
Customer Review: No...it's not as heavy as the old model.... Summary: 4 Stars
...but it is a well-made dish drainer with lots of space for dishes, cups, glasses, bowls, utensils, and the like.
I bought the large model to replace a no longer needed dishwasher, and I am happily running my dishes through quickly and getting out of the kitchen. Both good things.
I do agree with the other reviewers about the new silverware basket; it's not as convenient as the older design....my smaller pieces of silver need to be placed carefully to remain upright and dry spot free...but that's a quibble. Rubbermaid still makes the best dish drainer on the market....especially for those of us holdouts who prefer to hand wash their dishes.
